What is meditation? How can it help at physical, emotional and mental levels?

Meditation may be considered to be a special practice but it also a way of living a life, a way of embracing our everyday concerns but not being caught up with them. It does not mean that we ignore or repress our problems, but in fact that we relate to them in a peaceful and calm way, seeing our challenges in perspective.Meditation is a practice that encourages us to remain centred, responsible and aware and to live a life of inner freedom and joy. It is well known scientifically that the practice of meditation changes brain frequency to produce slower, more even rhythms - we are in what is known as the 'alpha' state. So meditation can have a very profound effect on our state of health, both psychologically and physically.

What is the spiritual connection with meditation?

Spirituality is simply connectedness, so it's not something to strive for, to attain, to be in any way ambitious about. The word spirituality derives from the Latin 'spirare', to breathe, so it simply means being connected, feeling 'inspired', natural and real. When we meditate we link to our true nature and the ebb and flow of universal energy, the 'breath' of aliveness. We practice tuning into the breath and by tuning into these natural rhythms we have a sense of connection. So meditation is first and foremost about connection to an inner state of acceptance, well-being and peace. In everyday life we can use this simple technique of remembering to be still to bring greater clarity, focus and awareness.

Are there different types of meditation and if so, how do they relate?

Essentially there is only one true meditation and that is the practice which encourages and facilitates a deep sense of peace. But there are many ways to achieve this.Having studied with teachers from different traditions from both the East and the West, I encourage people first to become relaxed, then to be able to visualise, concentrate and keep focused and ultimately to feel comfortable with a profound sense of inner stillness, centredness and ease in all their dealings. But this does not happen overnight. Like most things in life, it is a journey of discovery and needs to be given time to be fully effective. Meditation is a process, a pathway and a way of being which can effectively bring results.

Can anyone learn meditation?

In reality, it is a completely natural way of being; through the practice we are realising our true nature, so meditation is available to all. We may choose specific ways and means to deepen our practice but in essence from early beginnings to more advanced stages we are really learning to relax into being fully present and aware. We can translate this peace and clarity of being into becoming more calm, centred, productive and effective in our everyday lives. Anyone can experience meditation and soon see its positive results.
