Futon History
Futons gained popularity in the US in the 1970's - derived from the original Japanese futon, the "shikibuton". Western futons are based on the Japanese original. The futon mattress is often placed on a configurable frame for dual use as a bed and a chair or sofa. Typically, the frame folds in the middle allowing the futon to be used as a sofa and flattens to be used as a bed.

Health Benefits of Sleeping on a Futon
They may be hard to get used to but the Japanese futon has many health benefits. Unlike a soft mattress, the futon does not allow your joints to become unsupported and sag. Osteopaths say that if your joints sag too much, they can become overstretched during the course of sleep and contribute to back ache.
'If stretched for too long during sleep, the collagen fibres which protect the ligaments of our joints can become too lengthened and lead to a cricked neck or bad back,' says osteopath Richard Blacklaw-Jones.
A futon has other benefits too. Unlike a traditional divan bed, the mattress of a futon is placed on a wooden slatted base. This can be helpful in several ways. When we sleep, each person loses half a pint of moisture a night. A mattress placed on a slatted base allows greater circulation of air to reach the mattress. This can help to reduce sweating during the night.
Believe it or not, each person loses a pound of skin scales a year into their mattress, making mattresses a breeding ground for dust mites and bad news for asthma sufferers. However, greater air circulation from a wooden slatter base helps keep dust mite levels down which can help reduce asthma.
Some man-made mattresses can be contaminated with toxins which can exacerbate asthma. However, the wadding of futons are made from natural fibres, making it a healthier choice.
Research shows buying a new bed is more effective than sleeping pills and can improve a night's sleep by 42 minutes. The good news is futons come in different grades of mattress - so you can choose a softer version, rather than the hard rock versions associated with Japan!
